The scent of beginnings

Clara Skakka has always been able to smell what others miss. The daughter of a Copenhagen florist, she has sensed emotions through scent since childhood - fear as cold metal, love as vanilla and warm skin, grief pressing down like fog that never quite lifts. She has never understood why. Then a Swedish psychologist dies of a sudden heart attack, and Clara's senses explode: nosebleeds, overwhelming floods of emotion from every person in her building, scents that shouldn't exist. Something has transferred to her. Something ancient.A cryptic journal left by her grandmother draws her to Grasse, France, the cradle of perfumery, where an elite programme teaches the chemistry of scent and the science of emotion. Yet beneath the labs and jasmine fields lies a hidden order:The Twelve Gifts -ancient abilities carried by only 144 people worldwide. Life, Death, Power, Truth, Memory...
Clara's Gift is Balance - the most essential, and the most dangerous. The power to sense when humans and systems tip towards chaos, and to restore equilibrium. It is also the Gift that divides a fractured Society: one side guards the Gifts, the other wants to weaponize them - through products, politics, and control.
In a world where every breath can influence a choice, Clara must decide what she is willing to become.

Introduction to G.L. Haab

G. L. Haab is my pen name chosen to allow me to remain active in the world of Flavours and Fragrances while exploring its beauty, excitement and ethical complexities through fiction.
More than thirty years in the industry have provided the knowledge to write this story authentically; the pen name simply provides me the distance to imagine and reflect it freely.

The Twelve Scent Universe

The Twelve Scent UniverseThe ScienceBuried in the OR6A2 gene cluster on chromosome 11 is a rare polymorphism that mainstream genetics has catalogued and quietly set aside - a benign variant of unknown function, found in roughly one in ten thousand people worldwide. That is approximately 800.000 living humans, most of them unaware. What the variant actually does is create an extended network of olfactory receptor variants, connecting scent-processing to limbic and memory centres through a neural pathway that bypasses standard olfactory processing entirely. Carriers tend to be exceptional at anything requiring a fine nose: perfumery, sommelier, brewing, cooking, flavour and scent science. They assume they are simply talented. They are not simply talented. They are carriers. And twelve of them, at any given moment, are something more. The GiftsIn 1142, in the perfume city of Grasse, twelve master alchemists discovered that specific botanical molecules could do more than trigger memory and emotion - they could carry them. Through a ritual binding sacred botanical oils to specific bloodlines, they created twelve supernatural abilities, each anchored to a fundamental dimension of human experience:Memory. Truth. Balance. Desire. Life. Power. Fear. Hope. Change. Silence. Vision. Death. These are the Twelve Gifts. Each can be held by no more than twelve living bearers at any time. When a bearer dies, the Gift seeks the nearest compatible carrie. The person whose chromosome 11 variant most closely matches the vacated lineage — and transfers, often without warning. The new bearer does not choose. The Gift does not ask.At any moment, 144 people alive on this planet can smell emotions, read the residue of past events in physical objects, perceive lies as they form, sense the approach of mass mortality before any instrument detects it. They are perfumers, scientists, doctors, musicians, and diplomats. They move through the same cities as everyone else. They attend the same universities, ride the same trains, drink coffee in the same cafés.They are a parallel society, invisible inside the ordinary one.The Question That Divides ThemThe Society of Scents has existed for nine centuries to protect this secret and train those who carry it. But inside the Society, a philosophical divide has been deepening for generations - and it is not between good and evil. The Guardians hold that the Gifts are a responsibility with strict limits. If you can smell someone's grief, their fear, their desire - you have no right to act on it without consent. Free will is sacred. The moment bearers begin steering human behaviour, however gently, however well-intentioned, they have crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed. The Gifts exist to witness, to protect, to restore - not to lead. The Controllers hold that this restraint is a luxury the world can no longer afford. Humanity is already being shaped - by algorithms, by governments, by the invisible architectures of attention and advertising. If 144 people with the genuine ability to perceive human truth are standing aside while that happens, they are not preserving free will. They are abandoning responsibility. The Gifts exist to prevent suffering. To use them is not a corruption - it is the entire point.Neither position is wrong. Both emerge from care for humanity. The tension between them is old, and it is real, and in the present day - with surveillance capitalism mapping human emotion at scale. With political systems fracturing across continents, with the carrier population identifiable through commercial DNA testing for the first time in history - it is becoming something the Society can no longer contain internally. The debate is becoming a fracture. And the fracture is becoming a war fought in the quiet spaces: in Society councils, in the succession of Gifts, in who trains the newly awakened and what they are taught to believe.---The Twelve Scent Saga is a contemporary science-fantasy series set in the present day, rooted in real olfactory neuroscience and genetics, built on nine hundred years of hidden political history. It follows what happens when an ancient institution meets a modern crisis - and the people caught between two versions of what it means to do good.Series begins with: The Scent of Beginnings - Book One
